Surya Maya Pakhrin shown with her family. After spending 10 years as a migrant worker she and her husband returned to Nepal because they were underpaid and working under extreme conditions. Now, they want to do something in their own hometown/country. They lived in a squatter’s settlement area arranged by the local government and were engaged in small scale farming activities. Later, they heard of LabelSTEP’s Artisan Village Project. Surya Maya expressed her interest to enroll in the Master Weavers training and following Label STEP’s assessment, was qualified as a Master Weaver. Surya Maya and her husband were ex-weavers so it was easier for her to pick up weaving after a 10 year gap. They are interested in setting-up their own weaving units. | Photograph courtesy of LabelSTEP.
